Trysten followed her a little further, slightly worried that if he stayed too far behind he would end up plunging straight into the water. He looked at the sky and thought of how surreal it was to be walking on a partially frozen river when the sun shone so brightly in the sky above.
"Have you always been able to turn water to ice?" he asked, wondering if she had natural magic abilities or had been trained.
Trysten himself possessed no magical ability whatsoever, but he wasn't too annoyed by this. He accepted it as it had always been that way. He found that he possessed talents in other areas.

She looked back over at him. Her eyes full of spirit and life. "Yes. Yes I have. My mother was an elf. My father was human. I have both of there blood. She held all the magic. She could even summon. I am only just learning." she said and smiled. She spilled out a little of her history to him. "Have you ever thought of learning magic?"

Looking at Sapphire, Trysten saw the part of her that was elven in her beauty, although she did not seem to have the typically elven ears. Trysten thought about her question. He'd never really considered magic to play any part in his life, and didn't know what would change about him if he did. He'd lived his life depending on his physical skills.
"To be honest," he began, thinking about his reasoning as he spoke. "I've never really considered learning magic. I've never really felt like I've needed it."
He hoped she understood what he meant, as he was not entirely sure he understood. Taking another step forward he faltered on the ice a little, and waved his arms stupidly to keep his balance.

She giggled. She placed a gentle hand on his shoulder to help him keep his balance. She moved her cloak to the side to show a beautiful dragon sword. "My father gave it to me before he died." she said and smiled

Trysten swallowed as Sapphire put her hand on his shoulder. He seemed transfixed by her eyes, and then realised she was trying to show him her sword. He coughed slightly and looked down at the sword. It was a beautiful weapon and Trysten could see that Sapphire was proud of it.
He looked up again, and his eyes locked with hers. He opened his mouth to speak but no sound came out. He swallowed again and managed to form the words in his mouth.
"Do you fight well?" he asked quietly. He realised that staring at Sapphire maybe wasn't the most polite thing to do, but he found that he had an inability to look away.

"Pretty good. I learnt a lot from a warrior once." she blinked and drew the long sword. She breathed deeply and looked at the silver blade. Her eyes moved up and down it. She blinked one last time before letting the point rest on the ice. She looked back up at Trysten. "Why do you ask?"

Trysten listened as she explained about how she had been trained by a warrior, and thought about how she would probably be a good fighter should she choose to join the army. He smiled to himself as he thought about how the army had now become such a big part of his life.
"I just wondered, I suppose," he said, explaining why he had asked.
The sun was beginning to set in the sky, and the clouds were streaked with lines of pink and red. He looked at the ice, and saw the beautiful way the colours were reflected in it. He was still slightly in awe of the fact that he was walking on the river, but so far he had managed to stay upright and he commended himself for it.

She smirked and put her sword in its holster. She looked at the ice and looked back up. She wondered if he liked do swim. "You like swimming?" she asked. She made all the ice around them disappear. Till there was just a circle where they were standing. She unclipped the holster over to the bank. Not wanting it to rust.

Trysten smiled his usual half smile, but a little cheekier than usual. He watched as Sapphire threw her sword and sheath onto the bank, and did the same with his dagger and sheath which were belted around his waist. He had made the mistake of swimming with it on on a previous occasion, and the extra weight made it incredibly hard to swim well.
"I have to admit, I haven't been swimming in a long while," he said, not breaking eye contact with Sapphire as he spoke. "I do enjoy it though."
He wondered if Sapphire actually would remove the ice from beneath their feet, or if she was just bluffing. He tried to tell whether she was, but from the look in her eyes it could have been either. He continued looking into her blue eyes, trying to find a glimmer of doubt that would tell him she wouldn't remove the ice, but at the same time he tensed his muscles and braced himself for the plunge into the water, just in case.

She smiled and brought her hands together. A bright blue light flashed her eyes and the ice below them crumpled. She fell into the water. She opened her eyes. The blue was still on them. Making her look. Look like something different. She blinked five times and it went away. She kicked heavily pushing her to the surface. She waited for Trysten to do so. She was beginning to like him. A lot. Wait! Sapphire your here for work! Not love! Your family depends on you! She thought. Wait. I am older now. Not some foolish 10 year old. She could love. She could work to. She shook the thoughts out of her head. She waited again.

Trysten inhaled sharply as the solid form of the ice below him vanished and he plunged straight into the cool water. As he sunk downwards he opened his eyes, to see Sapphire's own appear to be flashing with some sort of light. He blinked, and when he had opened his eyes again she had begun to swim to the surface. He pulled himself upwards with all of his strength, enjoying every moment, as he recalled the pleasure of swimming, albeit fully clothed. He could see the surface above him, and saw that Sapphire had already reached it. A few seconds later he broke through the surface of the water and coughed slightly. He imagined he must have looked a terrible state with soaking wet hair. The wet strands fell over his eyes, and he turned to face Sapphire and laughed. He couldn't remember the last time he had done something as daft, but he was enjoying himself. He treaded water next to Sapphire and tried not to let the weight of his sodden clothes pull his light frame under again.

She smiled and laughed along with Trysten. She smiled and looked him directly in the eyes. When she realized she was staring she looked away embarresed. She looked down into the water and saw something shining. "Look at that." she said and pointed that way. She dove under and went towards it. When she got there it was a silver necklace with a green emerald on the end. She brought it back up. She held it out so he could see it to.

Trysten smiled and looked down as Sapphire broke their eye contact in an embarrassed sort of way. He had only known her for as long as they had been on the river, and she was as good as a stranger to him, but there was something about her that was easy to get on with. He felt like he could act himself around her. He watched as she suddenly dived under the water and swam towards the riverbed. She resurfaced with her light wet hair falling over her face. The shine off the object in her hand caught Trysten's eye, and he looked closer to see she was holding a small green emerald suspended from a thin silver chain. He touched it delicately with his fingers and smiled.
"Pity it's not a sapphire," he said, looking up at her and smiling. It had been a while since he had felt that content, with the only sounds being that of the light breeze through the trees and the gentle swish of the river as they treaded water to stay above the surface.

She smiled and looked back up at him. "I wonder who it belonged to?" she said. She smiled again. She sighed as she thought about it. Such a mystery. She looked abck at Trysten. She shivered. The breeze was cold. She swam over to the edge and climbed out. She grabbed her cloak and wrapped it around her.
